Inspirations and Doppelgangers

[This is an Out of Character thread. It's here because it fits.]

This past winter I started watching Buffy the Vampire Slayer for the first time, after a Clan Lord player, a known Buffy fan, told me about the series's musical episode. (Don't laugh. You play an online role-playing game and probably think there hasn't been a better captain since Jean Luc. Geek.) If you know me, you know I love musicals. I started watching Buffy in syndicationÛthe series ended in 2003Ûstarting with the fifth season, just to be sure to catch the musical episode. The rest is history: I'm a fan now.

But imagine my surprise when the series finale aired and the network started showing season 1 episodes. There on the screen before me was Slyph, though on the show they call her Cordelia. Who came firstÛSlyph or Cordie, the chicken or the eggÛdoesn't matter. It's her, damn it, and she is lovely and perfectÛlike Slyph.

Did you have an inspiration for your character? Did you find that someone fashioned a television character after your online character? Did you stumble across someoneÛin entertainment, literature, or in your every day lifeÛthat resembles your character so much that it scared you?

Tell your tale. I'm here to listen, even if it really isn't all about Slyph.

Well, I fashioned Nopey after Gumby's dog of the same name. Umm. I'm no expert on the mechanics of quantum time, but I think the authors of that show may have peeked forward into the future and based Gumby's dog on my character.

What I loved about Nopey (the dog) was that Gumby and Pokey would forever have to use reverse psychology on him to get him to do what they wanted him to do. And he would get this goofy, querelous look on his face once he'd completed the task he'd originally said "nope" to.

Now that I have a two year old, I'm putting the lessons I've learned from Nopey (the dog) and Nopey (the dwarf) to use on a daily basis.

It's damn hard to RP a character who says nothing but "nope" without being annoying, or saying things in \action boxes that facial expressions or body language couldn't suggest.

Heh, this topic seems dead but I thought I'd add my story.

"Lex" comes from Lex Murphy, a character in Jurassic Park.

Her personality was originally a combination of that character, and a friend of mine (who perfectly personifies a girl-who-doesn't-act-girly). After a couple months, things changed into a still mostly IC personality, but tempered toward a very OOC game community.

beeeeepblip...blip

That's me trying to be clever in helping to revive this topic. You see, it's one of those heart rate monitors! oh phoooey.

First there was Buck Mulligan, a literary reference to Ulysses. No one got that and it took up more screen than anyone really needs for a name. 10 characters is an estetic maximum IMO. Not to mention the problems names with spaces caused my search macro. One person got the reference, and quoted the passage that introduces the character, Telisianne rip.

About that episode of Buffy, it absolutely rocks. For a weekly show to not only consistantly put out good writing and good direction (some of the actors can't do much more than dimple up and talk about band camp) to write, score and choreograph a musical absolutely floors me. That and the oh so hot musical lesbian scene.

*ahem* That's a MASSIVELY MULTIPLAYER PERSISTANT WORLD online roleplaying game. And James Tiberius is the manliest man to boldly fornicate where no man has fornicated before.

Captain Stinky or Captain Monty Na'Grim by his real name that nobody but like uhh 5 people know, is a better captain than kirk or picard.

As for the personality of stinky...... i just think of any and every cocky, swashbuckling, ultracool dudes that ever graced any book, tv show, or movie. Lil bit of me thrown in there and BAM coolest pirate ever, and a better captain than either of those trek captains, or alteast stinky thinks so.

As for other characters fashioned after stinky, one comes to mind, Captain Jack Sparrow, or atleast thats what hrothgar said.

For me, Twilth was just inspired by any noble upstanding sword-swingin' hero. The name I came up with myself.

Polanna is a name taken from the David Eddings novel Polgara the Sorceress. Polgara takes the name Polanna while she's in the land of Gar og Nadrak, and learns to dance really really well. A lot of other things happen, but I love the way Polgara creates the character "Polanna," who is herself yet not herself. That said, Polanna-the-exile is very little like Polanna-the-book-character. Her personality is mine, if her thoughts and actions are her own. That is, she reacts close to the way I would act if I had gone through/done all the things she has. Sort of.

Terise's name comes from one of my most favourite authors - Stephen Donaldson. There are only two books in the series of Mordant's Need, but they are well worth reading: "The Mirror of her Dreams" and "A Man Rides Through". Terisa Morgan is brought to another world through a mirror in her apartment, where she finds that for the first time in her life, she can make a difference. Previously, she used mirrors only as a means to convince herself of her own existence, but in Mordant, she discovers that they have other uses too.... I wont say any more, as I dont want to spoil it for anyone who wishes to read them.

Terise's character is not, however, modelled on Terisa's. Terise is simply one facet of SWC's personality.

Wow, all of yours sound so interesting and actually came from somewhere... i made mine up in about 10 minutes. I couldn't think of a name... knew i wanted to be a rescue type healer... so i made the catch phrase:

"/yell Give me a yell when you get fallen!"

(a yell when)

And that was that ^_^

Heh, I didn't get my name from any book (though a number of my other characters do). Zepel was a name of my Escape Velocity pilot, and so that was the name I took when I got to CL. This was in beta, and I forgot my password within a few days... so I just made a new character.

And so Xepel was born. ;)

Mine came from StarCraft. I was playing that a lot, when I found CL, and I spent hours thinking up a name.. The ancient race of the Xel'Naga came to mind, there you have it.

My other characters have names based off some other things too.. Chrono Trigger (No, I'm not Chrono ), and a "Young Jedi" book series (obscure name), heh. The rest of mine are fairly random.

In the 13th century on the Isle of Man, goatherds on the north end of the island discovered they could stimulate an increase in milk production by rubbing a dab of goat semen around the nostrils of a doe. They called this practice "slyphing the goat."

Although the act of slyphing the goat spread throughout Europe, the term remained local to the isle of Man and took on many different names in various cultures.
