Inspirations and Doppelgangers

by noivad » Fri Mar 30, 2007 9:13 am

I got my main's name from my nickname which is from that old game Battletech. One of the houses in the game was The House of Davion -- the most powerful single house in the game. I didn't choose to play Davion it's just that my friends forced me to play that house so they could play outlaws, mercenaries and raiders in the fringe.

(At this point the game was in Rev 1, so there weren't a lot of weapons, so they made their own weapons that were really unbalanced. Still -- because I've always been good at tactics and strategy -- I would hold my own. I started to develop new systems that weren't as unbalanced and I started wiping the floor with them once my Dual Fusion Core engines, Vibration Barrier System, and LOC were approved by everyone.)

Anyway, many many years back I turned the name around after people started calling me Davion, and I've been noivad ever since.

Thoomilicious on the other hand came from that song that was popular at the time I made him called "Bootylicious" It only made sense once I chose the name to make his catch phrase "Sexy Thoom!"

I was under the impression that the jelly went along with the impliment of insertion that he oft speaks so fondly of.

Aravir Eldanar was the name of my character in a long-running Middle Earth Role Playing game in the mid to late 80s. Besides the name, CL Aravir has nothing in common with the original Aravir.

I made him an archaeologist as a twist on the fantasy game cliche of looting dungeons. Instead of looting gold and silver, he'd be carefully measuring and recording exactly where each pottery fragment was located on the floor. ;-)

Slyph has returned- time to wake up some of these threads!
Slyph wrote:[This is an Out of Character thread. It's here because it fits.]
Did you have an inspiration for your character? Did you find that someone fashioned a television character after your online character? Did you stumble across someone in entertainment, literature, or in your everyday life that resembles your character so much that it scared you? Tell your tale. I'm here to listen, even if it really isn't all about Slyph.
My family nicknamed me "Moose" when I was a toddler because I was always literally off the growth charts whenever I went to see the pediatrician; and because by age two I was doing things like moving furniture around the house for fun.
(pushing around sofas, lifting tables over my head, etc)

So when it came time to select a name for my CL character all those years ago, I went to the encyclopedia and looked up the entry for "Moose". Turns out that the Latin genus/species name for moose is "Alces Alces". It's as easy as that. :)

According to this, it's pronounced "AL-ceez", but I've always pronounced it as "al-SEIS" (as in the Spanish word for "six")

After that, I started getting pretty heavily into Rolemaster with my friends, and more often than not I'd end up putting together an Elvish prefix/suffix out of the back of The Simarillion for all of my characters' names.

"Angadol" was originally a Martial Artist in said PnP RPG, and his name translates from Elvish into "Iron Head".

"Ajah" is a reference to the Wheel of Time series that I settled on after about 2 hours of deliberation/writer's block.

"Athran" is something that I just made up on the spot, so he'll likely be getting a name change sometime in the future.

Feodoric is one of the default character names in Jeff Vogel's Exile series, as some of you will know. He started off trained as a spellcaster with low level training in both Mage and Priest spells. For some reason he was my favourite, despite being rather less useful than either the Priest or the Mage in the party. I could pretend that I chose the name because Mystic was also the least useful of three possible class options, but I really didn't think that hard about it. The surname 'Mermeios' I just made up.

My other (rarely seen) characters are named after a Shakespeare character and a pretty but noxious weed...

Heh, spoken aloud everyone I talk to pronounces your character "AL-ses". I dunno what they call you on vent or teamspeak, but you could ask.
