More and more grad schools are doing the online thing or extension campuses for some of their programs (e.g. John Hopkins, GW). I am hoping that GW will do that for a pie in the sky degree I've been toying with getting.Aldernon wrote:<snip>what w/ sending my wife to grad school and all the accompanying costs associated w/ that endeavor (new car, second household, books, tuition, etc. etc.)</snip>

Mostly. Still need to pay for the account as far as I understand (and the additional char / moves / etc…).Michael wrote:So CL is now free? Cool!

Hmm, interesting choice to keep the front-end payment, which is the biggest barrier to new players. I understand about snert/abuse control, but .... Well, anyway, I'm glad to see some of our old friends return. Let's hope that the new demo arrives before the limited-time bump in population subsides.

Expired accounts seem reactivated?
I'm a little confused by Joe's use of the term "free account" in his FAQ. Talking about the paid accounts will have benefits in the future, access to new areas, items, etc. Does the "free" term apply to the accounts created after this new free CL was implemented, and the old all-the-time-paying accounts are the "paying accounts?" Or is DT expecting people to keep on paying even though there are no more monthly fees? Cause with the economy in the shitter I cant imagine someone thats not expected to pay will continue paying.
So can someone clarify what the "free accounts" mean? I'm certainly not a "free-rider," but I dont wanna be punished in-game for not paying for something thats free.

Ooook, so thats affirmative.Eldon wrote:Did the FAQ answer the above?
Anyway its a great idea and I'm glad to see DT is sacrificing the money to get more players, and in turn more fun.
Thanks!

Disagree.. it's the iPhone model and that's working for millions. I think people will happily pay $14.95 up front to play Clan Lord without recurring costs. It's a MASSIVE world after all. I just dropped $9.99 for a mobile X-Plane app that's extremely limited, but still fun enough to justify it. iPhone Clan Lord could use the accelerometers for movement freeing up thumbs etc. for chats, macros etc. Wouldn't that be cool. Someday maybe...Torin wrote:Hmm, interesting choice to keep the front-end payment, which is the biggest barrier to new players.

iPhone people are self-selected to be willing to pay $500+ for a phone, far above what the market requires for a cell phone. The computer F2P game's target audience is teens who have a little money to spend now and then, but not enough for a subscription. CL isn't on the iPhone, so you can't succeed with a business model dependent on iPhone demographics.Jazz wrote:Disagree.. it's the iPhone model and that's working for millions. Is X-Plane an MMO? Do you continue to cost the company money after you download it?

Okay fine. Bad example. The principle is sound though. A one up $14.95 fee does mimic the iPhone business model though, which is proving to work incredibly well. A "teen" is much more likely to not buy Clan Lord because it's only $14.95 so they will immediately assume it sucks because it isn't $59.95 like their XB360 games... then they will see the graphics... then they will meet the people... Clan Lord is most definitely not targeting F2P teens in my opinion and if they are trying to target them they are even worse at marketing than they already appear.Torin wrote:CL isn't on the iPhone, so you can't succeed with a business model dependent on iPhone demographics.
Anyway... whatever... it's "free" now for me however I slice it, which is the only thing that would have brought me back into this world anyway after 10 years of paying for it and letting it run it's course. I'm actually fairly excited to come back and see what's new at this point.

Man I don't remember any of my information any chance I can get access to Zaroff and the account he is on? There's still a Zaroff in the database amazingly enough! I hope I was in a library.

Yeah, I'd love to get rid of the money barrier to entry, too, but I don't want snerts or hundreds of bot accounts.
One thing I've been thinking about is an Agratis adventure -- you use an Agratis character to do a lengthy fun quest, and after you succeed, you get a free account coupon. Or something.

Do you agree on even one bot account?
To obtain a decent character which means a lot of ranks or you place it in the lib for years or you get the favor of dedicated übers like Suu'ub or Lorikeet to do Jades for many hours. After you can get it fast better if Geotzou agree to take you to the foothills. If you don't then it's the much more precarious and lengthy way solo of the rockodiles, the crawlers and later the tahxis.
With much more exiles clanning I think the most urgent is now to improve the list of those clanning or it will become necessary to place the screen on the vertical (turned 90º).
