I'm pretty sure anyone can sell items, though you obviously can't play them until you're in the guild.

I'm not 100% certain myself, though - try it with someone you trust, and then we'll know for sure.

At some point, it was changed so that you could sell them.
It used to be, none of the instruments were sell-able.

Yeah, the confusion on my (and probably Xepel's part) is that, when they were first added as /sellable, a bug prevented anyone but Full Bards from doing so. And then that was fixed, but to what extent, we apparently forget. Thinking it over again though, I'm fairly sure anyone can sell them now. But if you're not at least a quester, you can't get the part made into an instrument anyway.

And even if you are, it might be rejected, which is indeed the dumbest thing of all. Way to make bards get pissed and decide not to play. Good going.

If your sense of fun is shattered by a single item in the game not working for you, you probably didn't really want to play that much.

Instrument part breakage rates have continually been reduced since the inception of that system, and they are ridiculously low now. In the past 8 or so parts I've checked, one of them has failed, and even though I really wanted that instrument (A Conch) at the time, it wasn't game-ending for me. There will always be more parts. There will also always be people who hoard parts or try to sell them for extravagant prices, and there will always be people who are generous and give parts freely or for reasonable cost. Also, the more that parts break, the more opportunity we have for fun composing contests with rare parts as prizes. Oh, wait, we haven't had one of those in awhile.. I wonder why.. Maybe because almost everyone has all the instruments they want by now, because breakage is so low? (Okay, that isn't a fair assessment, participation in Bard contests is at all-time-lows because there are only like 1 to 3 actively barding people at any given time.)

What I am saying is, .. Maybe it wasn't fun that you lost, but it'll be fun when you win. Heck, maybe a cool RP opportunity could have been made out of it, or maybe some other fortunate bard would be willing to lend you theirs while they aren't playing as much. Or hey, instruments are /sellable now, maybe you could trade with someone for awhile? There are a dozen things you could do about it other than stamp your feet and leave.

But hey, maybe that's just the Mystic in me?

Yeah, I get excited when I think that someday 3 or 4 years down the line someone happens to find another rare instrument part x who happens not to be a hoarder, and happens to want to put in the time and energy to make a contest or event, the part happens to be the one I don't have yet, and I happen to be actually in the mood to compose at the time and happen to actually finish the song I said I would compose. OK the last couple of things there are totally my fault, and it is my fault I don't enjoy waiting and being patient like mystics do, but still. :P I think the Hendrux test used to be more relevant when there were a lot of interested bards in the lands, but at this point it is incredibly disappointing when all the factors line up, you get that part that you've only seen once in the however many years you've been playing the game, everyone is excited about you getting it, and it just happens to be absolutely useless due to a game mechanic. If Hendrux stopped claiming that instrument parts are inferior so he can take them for himself to fuel his addiction to breaking them and lighting them on fire, it certainly wouldn't hurt, there might be a couple more bards motivated to play (Ayella at least, and she alone would increase the active bard number by like 33%).

Actually, I found the bone and made it years ago before I realized how much I hated the sound of the thing. I'd really like a Gitor, because maybe then I'd finish my questing and actually write songs for it. I wish there were a plug in for some music apps to write this stuff though. I have a hard time using the music app an keeping my focus on writing. The problem stems from the fact that I really don't know much about scales and what sound the notes actually make. I need ear training and the built in CL bard tests are pretty cool, I just wish there was an in game music class where I could be ear trained and I could learn the scales and such.

There is a series of NPC's placed in the entrance to the Bard Field explicitly for ear-training purposes. They're pretty handy, actually. /thank AnnGM \r

Yeah, I do sometimes find that CLTF gets in the way of my writing, but then when I tried to move to a notation-like system, I realized that I could notate in CLTF much faster than on staff paper, computerized or otherwise.

But hey, if you'd write for a gitor, check out the Trading post, I think there are some Tor shells available!

Or maybe the only reason they'd want to play anymore is the joy of writing and playing songs, and having that taken away from them by a slightly stupid /script ruins all the fun in it?

Please rewind many years to when Hendrux rejected what, 30+ parts from me and Maz had to "fix" him for a while so I could finally get an instrument after I begged Joe to intervene.

I think my 'wanting to play' was tested then. Thanks.

Maz screwed things up when he let there be a million parts and then made Hendrux reject every single one of them as a result. However, this was a while in the past, and there's nothing we can do to change what happened. We just have to move on.

If you enjoy playing and writing songs, you should be happy if your friends help you get instruments. Yes, occasionally they don't work - I hate that too. But with the help of friends, you can get these instruments sooner rather than later. No reason to leave just because one of those parts didn't work - if you enjoy playing the music, nothing has stopped you from continuing to do so.

Or I can write music on my own time and not beat my head against a wall.

I suppose what I'm trying to say is there are so few bards, why do we still have this system that screws over and annoys them?

I suppose "because then there is some excitement in the risk of not getting what you want." But yes, there are few enough Bards as there are....

I'd say to go ask BardGM, but I'm not exactly sure who that is (Ann, perhaps?) or if they're listening. You could always ask Chum, but Skirwan already stole his line.

I sent off a note to the Bard Council, I'm sure they'll have a chat about it. Ann has been known to be super nice and quick about adding/changing stuff for Bards, so I'm sure that if a change is going to be made, it could be made fairly quickly.
