I had thought that the notes on their own would not be very helpful. I planned to combine them with lesson #1 and post them together later. But since it seems as tho you want them.. I'll do that now
Code: Select all
Guinness exclaims, "Alright, I'll describe - briefly - the process that can make writing music a whole lot easier!"
Guinness says, "1. Make your song in a music writing program"
Guinness says, "2. Export that song to a .midi file"
Guinness says, "3. Convert the file to CLTF"
Guinness says, "4. Profreed the CLTF to check for errors"
Guinness exclaims, "We'll focus mostly on step 1 today!"
Guinness says, "I've gone ahead and checked out a few free music making programs"
Guinness says, "I focused mostly on learning how to use one that works on both mac and pc"
Guinness says, "but since we are mostly pc users here, I'll touch briefly on a pc only program called Anvil Studios"
Guinness says, "http://i1233.photobucket.com/albums/ff400/whitepaperbutterfly/Music%20Class%20101/AnvilPianoRoll.jpg"
Guinness says, "The thing about Anvil that is kind of unique, is this "Piano Roll Editor""
Guinness says, "You can see the piano keys all along the left side"
Guinness says, "then the horizontal green bars are music notes which correspond to the keys they are beside"
Guinness says, "All you need to do to write a song is click where you want your note.."
Guinness says, "the higher up the screen, the higher the note"
Guinness says, "lower is lower note sounds of course"
Guinness says, "and from left to right is time"
Guinness says, "the shorter the bar, the shorter the note"
Guinness exclaims, "So all you need to do to make a song with Anvil is to click where you want your notes!"
Guinness says, "It's a very intuative way of writing music"
Guinness says, "This may be a good option for you if you don't know a whole lot :)"
Guinness says, "If you want to download the program, and play around with it: their webpage can be found here"
Guinness says, "http://www.anvilstudio.com/"
Guinness says, "I'll move onto the program that both mac and pc users can use."
Guinness says, "It's called Melody Assistant"
Guinness says, "I spent quite a bit of time figuring out the basics of what someone would need to effectively write"
Guinness says, "first off - if you want melody assitant: here is where you can download it"
Guinness says, "http://www.myriad-online.com/en/products/melody.htm"
Guinness says, "I'll start going through the program now. I have pictures,"
Guinness says, "so you don't have to download it right away to follow along"
Guinness says, "I also have all the links I'm showing you saved"
Guinness says, "I'll give you them before you go, so you have notes for later"
Guinness says, "http://i1233.photobucket.com/albums/ff400/whitepaperbutterfly/Music%20Class%20101/StartingOff.jpg"
Guinness says, "When first making a song in M.A.there are a whooole lot of options of how it is going to get you to write for it"
Guinness says, "I've selected two that I think would work the best"
Guinness says, "the red arrow for Guitar + Tabulature for you who are more comfortable with the guitar"
Guinness says, "and some notation suited for a piano"
Guinness says, "if you go with the guitar option, there are a few shortcuts to save you some time"
Guinness says, "you hover your mouse over the guitar strings (marked tab)"
Guinness says, "and with the keypad, you can press 0 - 9 to select which fret you want to pluck"
Guinness exclaims, "then just click on the string you want and viola!"
Guinness says, "if you want to hit a note higher than the 9th fret, you gotta right click"
Guinness says, "for mac (and pc) users.. there is an option in assigning keyboard commands to change the note"
Guinness says, "might have ot set it to + and - or something"
Guinness says, "and to quickly change note durations, on the number keys above the keyboard..."
Guinness says, "1 - 5 will do that for you quickly"
Guinness says, "But, we can look at it a different way too..."
Guinness says, "http://i1233.photobucket.com/albums/ff400/whitepaperbutterfly/Music%20Class%20101/ImportantTools.jpg"
Guinness says, "you can set toolsbars to stay open for you under the windows tab"
Guinness says, "I've selected the ones that I feel are necessary to have open for you there with the coloured lines :)"
Guinness says, "I'll over over each one briefly now.."
Guinness says, "the editing tools:
Guinness says, "http://i1233.photobucket.com/albums/ff400/whitepaperbutterfly/Music%20Class%20101/EditTools.jpg"
Guinness says, "Click on the pencil (add) button when you want to write notes in"
Guinness says, "Select makes it easy to select a whole bunch of music. Useful for copying and pasting or deleting lots of stuff"
Guinness says, "I didn't find erase all that useful.. but it has it's place. With erase you can remove one note at a time
Guinness says, "ex) surgically take out stuff from chords"
Guinness says, ""Insert" will help you apply another effect to a note"
Guinness says, "try is neat, you can click on a note and it will play it for you"
Guinness says, "and zoom.. everyone knows zoom"
Guinness says, "The question mark is useful, can help explain the commands to you in more depth"
Guinness says, "???? 1 and 2 - I have no idea what to do with these"
Guinness says, "onto the note tools:
Guinness says, "http://i1233.photobucket.com/albums/ff400/whitepaperbutterfly/Music%20Class%20101/NoteTools.jpg"
Guinness says, "I put a yellow dot on the ones that are particularly valuable in writing for CL"
Guinness says, "in CLTF (clan lord tune format) you assign note durations using numbers"
Guinness says, "so 1 would be really short"
Guinness says, "and 9 would be really long"
Guinness says, "so you can see how long each note is"
Guinness says, "the sixteenth note will be about as short CL can play"
Guinness says, "it's the note with two flags on it"
Guinness says, "the next step up is the eighth note"
Guinness says, "you can see it lasts twice as long as a sixteenth note"
Guinness says, "then the quarter note is twice the duration of a eighth"
Guinness says, "and a half is twice that of a quarter..."
Guinness asks, "But what if you wanted a note that fits in between?"
Guinness says, "the "Dotted note" will help with that"
Guinness says, "add a dot on a note at it gets 1.5x it's duration"
Guinness says, "so an eighth note (2) with a dot will have a duration of 3"
Guinness says, "that's about all we'll touch on for note durations today"
Guinness says, "next up: dynamic tools (volume)
Guinness says, "http://i1233.photobucket.com/albums/ff400/whitepaperbutterfly/Music%20Class%20101/DynamicTools.jpg"
Guinness says, "For beginning to learn about making music, you won't really need these"
Guinness says, "but later on when you want to squeeze some more expression out of a song"
Guinness says, "then these will be your best friend"
Guinness exclaims, "and onwards...!"
Guinness says, "http://i1233.photobucket.com/albums/ff400/whitepaperbutterfly/Music%20Class%20101/Ottava-Tempo-Pedal.jpg"
Guinness says, "There is one tool in here that will be useful to you, the tempo tool"
Guinness says, "with it you set the pace of the music - how fast it plays"
Guinness says, "next up, rest tools:"
Guinness says, "http://i1233.photobucket.com/albums/ff400/whitepaperbutterfly/Music%20Class%20101/RestTools.jpg"
Guinness says, "These are kind of like the note tools.... but instead of making a place for a sound.. it makes a place for a period of silence"
Guinness says, "Same deal with the note durations, they've all got different lengths and can get their durations multiplied..."
Guinness exclaims, "by 1.5 with a dot!"
Guinness says, "now... for the sucky part...."
Guinness says, "http://i1233.photobucket.com/albums/ff400/whitepaperbutterfly/Music%20Class%20101/Clef-Signature.jpg"
Guinness says, "These options are actually locked out from the free version"
Guinness says, "the time signature tool can be useful..."
Guinness says, "but it's not absolutely nessesary"
Guinness says, "the useful bit from the barline tools:"
Guinness says, "http://i1233.photobucket.com/albums/ff400/whitepaperbutterfly/Music%20Class%20101/BarlineTools.jpg"
Guinness says, "you can place the start repeat at one end of something"
Guinness says, "and the end at the other"
Guinness exclaims, "and it'll play it twice!"
Guinness says, "if you double click the end repeat,"
Guinness says, "it'll open up a window where you can set it to repeat more times if you like"
Guinness exclaims, "the virtual piano!"
Guinness says, "http://i1233.photobucket.com/albums/ff400/whitepaperbutterfly/Music%20Class%20101/VirtualPiano.jpg"
Guinness says, "At first it doesn't really do much"
Guinness says, "but if you change this option here....:"
Guinness says, "http://i1233.photobucket.com/albums/ff400/whitepaperbutterfly/Music%20Class%20101/ActivateKeyboard.jpg"
Guinness says, "When you press a key, it'll write that note in for you on the score ^_^"
Guinness says, "I ran into a bit of a snag with it tho.."
Guinness says, "to add more notes over top of each other, it sometimes forced the bar break on you when it shouldn't..."
Guinness says, "to get past that obstacle, do this:"
Guinness says, "http://i1233.photobucket.com/albums/ff400/whitepaperbutterfly/Music%20Class%20101/UnforceBarBreaks.jpg"
Guinness exclaims, "that's about as much as you need to have to begin experimenting with music!"
Guinness says, "see if you can come up with a simple melody by the next time we meet"
Guinness exclaims, "even if you think the melody you come up with sucks, that's okay!"
Guinness says, "In art, mistakes can be turned into some beautiful things"
