I go out of my way to post Off-Topic-ish things in there specifically to avoid the auto-prune...

autoprune would decimate post counts.

Eh I'd actually like autoprune in fwitbuh, Seems like the forums, while fun, becomes detrimental afte rabout 3 pages

I think just turn autoprune off in Off Topic. AFAIK, there are no "bandwidth" issues with keeping posts around. At most it would be disk storage, which should be a non-issue. The only other thing I can think of would be indexing overhead for the search function.

I don't think autoprune would hit thread length because most of the "shitstorms" happen and then blow over. 5 days and the Cammie thread hit page 6.

Just for grins I went over to Straight Dope (different yes, pay board and different forum software), and I see somewhere around a 1/2 million threads and 12 million posts. We're a little under that.

If one of off-topic and FWitB is going to be unpruned, it should off-topic.

I think the explosion of thread-bumping Largo just created is a really good indicator that opt-in is needed.

It's our punishment for allowing the Badlands to exist in the first place.

Largo's Antisocial behavior is just going to get worse. The fucker needs banning.

I think it would be really important to make FWitB auto-prune. FWitB was meant to be nothing but Troll posts, and thus have such little value.

Was it really that hard to click on "Mark Topics Read" without looking at them, and move on?

I wouldn't mind an opt out, but it wasn't that big of a deal.

Because when you mark all read, it also clears the normal topics that were amongst the weeds?

Read topics still clog up the list.

I guess I check the Sentinel differently. I don't look at the "View unread posts" or "View new posts" at all. I click on the Forum that shows by its color that there is something new in it. then I click and read whatever post I want to. So if there are 20 posts in FWiTB, I can just click above on the "Mark Topics Read" and be done with it. I guess if you try to use the methods that intermingle things it might be more difficult. Some forums I don't bother looking at.

If it was just made fully opt-in or *even* opt-out instead... I would be just peachy.

You don't have to read all of the threads just because they're new. I use the view unread posts option and only read what I will find interesting. Once I saw all of the posts and Largo's name I knew that he was bumping a bunch of old posts, read what I wanted to, and then marked everything else read. It doesn't take long to do and you are in control of what you read and don't read.
