The problem with Maeght

RE: Flamewars...
Thank you hunter for pointing out the frivolity of these forums in a clear concise and constructive manner. I agree with you, that's why I stopped flaming for the sake of flaming, and try to be constructive here.

Since the main topic was the latest incident with Maeght. I thought it appropriate to do as I suggested to Maeght and split the thread (read on) so we can discuss the back story on how it's gotten to this point. Maeght was warned before it went in game that his style of discourse was causing problems. Various people, not a mob, pointed it out. He chose not to listen. He was sued in game, an I helped get him convicted after he chose not to heed the warnings. I spoke with him at length after he declared that he would never hunt with me nor accept my aid again, trying to figure out why he took it so personally. He simply stated the sentinel shouldn't spill over into the game. I agreed it would have been nice had it not and even apologized, since it's clear that PWC's feelings were hurt, it did happen and it was because of his irrationality (or rationalizing to an extreme) in one medium it had to spill over to another one. It's sad it got to that point, but he's reaping what he sows. I tried reeling in his style of dissent for dissent's sake. I offered him advice that he shouldn't derail threads, but instead start new threads based off his take. Really it's a very minor difference, but I told him I thought it would be constructive, and not destructive to threads and the sentinel community in general. He refused.

If he wants to be the voice of dissent, that's his right. But arguing with people for the sake of arguing -- not because you simply have a dissenting opinion is anti-social at best. If he wants to cast himself the martyr and become an outcast among outcasts, let him. He'll probably be the first to tell you he doesn't need anyone to fight his battles for him. He, like every other adult, chooses where he stands. Its not our fault he's chosen to stand under the toilet bowl.

So, I predict that if Maeght chooses to continue being this voice of dissent, he'll drive himself from the game with the help of a growing number of people. This latest incident will not be the last, so long as he continues to disagree for disagreement's sake.

If you'd like to reply with something constructive to say please do so here. If it's simply to flame, don't bother. I put this thread here so I can delete or edit posts I find destructive to a frank discussion of this exile an the PWCs him.

I don't understand why you want to have a discussion about it at all, and I personally feel that things that happen on the Sentinel do not belong in game. If Maeght in game says something that people want to sue him for, that's fine. If Maeght on the Sentinel says things that Maeght in game isn't repeating, then I don't understand why the need to bring it in game.

Keep the Sentinel and the game separate. Very little that goes on here is IC. For the most part, you wouldn't know someone's Sentinel persona by their actions in game, and vice versa.

If you don't want things you say on the Sentinel to effect your in game character use a different name on the Sentinel. What you say on here should reflect you and your character.

Thats how I feel anyway.

The problem is that then people will try to find out who you are in game, or discredit whatever you are saying on the basis that you don't have a character to back things up. It's lose-lose, really.

There is far more to me than you could sum up from any forum and/or game interaction.

Keep the Sentinel on the Sentinel.
There's some room for overlap I guess, if we're talking purely Town Square stuff, but the junk I think we're all thinking of should be kept separate. There's no call for harassment.

In the instance of Maeght: It's the Sentinel. You don't like him, just /foe him.
You're worried someone will believe him, so you want to shut him up? Well, whatever, that's really your problem.

But... you've already "solved" that problem by engaging in an endless stream of back-and-forths. I think at this point, anyone who cares to wade through the muck you all sling can make an informed decision about who they want to believe.
