I'm one of the opinion that night shouldn't be so watered-down looking... I wonder what others think. Would you like a darker night which might obscure vision, or keep it as is? Remember that with the option of turning night off, a dark night would put those who turn it off at a disadvantage compared to others. But does it really matter?

Let Jeff know, and maybe it will change!

I'm also adding to the poll an option for color effects, which I think would be awesome. For example, night would desaturate colors and/or add a blue tint. Sunset would be tinted red. Sunrise might be tinted yellow. Now, I don't know if these are possible or if Jeff can or would do them, but I am very impressed with the Open GL client and think it has the potential to be even better - maybe we can convince him.

Let me rephrase that : With a noticably darker night, those who turn it off would be at an ADVANTAGE over those who don't. But I think it's like strict play. I like it. Wink

From memory: It's not that the client wouldn't go very dark if the server told it to, it's just that the light levels on the server are fairly high even in dark places. The GL client COULD map these values to a different darkness scale, but that would be somewhat hacky.

On color effects: Desaturation is, IIRC, a fairly simple process, but it really depends on how the GL client works, as to whether or not it can be applied. It might also burn a significant amount of processor time on low/low-mid end machines. It would also probably be tricky to get it to look right. Probably not worth it until everybody is using the GL client and strict-play night is enforced (personally, I hope this is as soon as possible).

Edit: Also, adding yellow/blue/red tints is stupidly easy in OpenGL. That probably wouldn't be a problem at all.
Edit2: A technical problem, that is. I have no idea whether it's acceptable to the GMs or even desirable.

I very much like the idea for sunset/sunrise color shifts. Good call.

As for night.. I think there should be enough variety to accomodate those who want it off, and those who want night to be so dark that they can barely see themselves.

Another idea; In the same vein as Sutai's sunset/rise idea, howzabout some moonlight effects, related to how full the moon is.. Would be lotsa fun to go orga bashing on a full moon night! (Also, I don't know, but if they aren't, orga lightning and flames should have some spiffy effects too.. I don't usually use the GL client (yet) so I don't know everything about it's effects..)

P.S. Kudos to Jeff for his hard volunteer work!

One thing I've been dreaming of is hallucinatory color effects when you get stoned on Herpetad juice, i.e. licking lizards.

Gimme an amen, Vagile, you lizard licking hunk o' Zo-grrl!

All of these ideas would be awesome. I guess caves would be dark too, whatever the time of day?

I'd really like to see an fmocr with night, moonlight and the orga lightning!!

P.S. oh and perhaps give apprentices the equivalent of a 'light' ability, train for range, use up your energy as its duration. You know, Sun and all that Smile

FYI: There is a thread about mystics and light: http://www.vagilemind.com/clanlord/viewtopic.php?t=257

I think there is also one about how many mystics it takes to screw in a light bulb, but couldn't seem to find it.
