I've edited Chum's words but kept the context.
Chum wrote:Poll answers should reflect the choice, but not the motivation.
For example, polls often offer the choices:
* Good idea, because FOO
* Decent idea, but BAR
* Bad idea, because BAZ
But what if I think it's a good idea because of OMG? Or a decent idea because of WTF? or a bad idea, because BBQ? I can still select good/decent/bad, regardless of my reasons, but putting the reasons in the poll discourages participation. For example, you might be able to see how the following poll presents a cognitive dissonance:
Who is the best GM?
* Chum, because we should find a way to feed the hungry and end war. Also, kittens are cute.
* Pengy, because suffering is the natural condition of humanity, and that's a good thing.
* Eldon, because I'm gay.
So my suggestion is to set up polls that offer the polled choices, without attributing their reasons.
