New Caves

by MaryJane » Sat Aug 25, 2007 11:00 am

Today Agent and I found a new set of caves off of East Forest river. So far we haven't noticed anything all that interesting to report, but several names were tossed around.

I thought I would put it up for a vote.

Agent thinks it should be Purple Springs, since he thinks it's a spring for the east forest river and northern lakes.

I originally thought of Purple Caverns.

Skirwan Suggested Purple Spa, since it's fire and water and seems like a sauna/jaccuzi.

What do you all think?

How about "a hot and damp place?"

I know it's sometimes hard to tell, but I was joking at the time.

Though Purple Carevns is a more appropriate name for it, I voted Purple Spirngs which abbreviates to PS, not PC, which we already have one of those.

If not an exile's name, I'd name it as it is, rather than giving it a nickname that is unrelated. Not digging the "purple" part.

Voted: none of the above.

Holy turd on a stick...are Xepel and I in agreement?

Considering it's not purple at all, I'll never call it "Purple <anything>".

That'd be like me stumbling into New East Forest and proclaiming "Ah! I shall name this *Aqua* East Forest, even though nothing is aqua!"

I like the name "Fire Springs."

Discoverers naming discoveries is a longstanding tradition.

(Alchemist's Folly. Jannar's Grove. Lundar's Lake. Hippie's Hollow. Orion Wood. There's no convention that names need to be descriptive or even accurate.)

We also didn't "stumble into it" ... we followed some scorch marks that Kayander Mere found, and came across a cave, which we explored.

So I guess that Kayander should have is word to say on the naming ?

Fire Springs sounds cool. But I don't really care about the name and if there is nothing more there than what we found today, I guess I won't spend a lot of time there either ;-)

Not much of a discovery if you followed a fairly clearly defined path there!

I don't care if MJ decides what *she* wants to call it, the community will eventually decide on a name by which they call it normally. When the discoverer names it in such a way that it is easily known and accepted, great! If they name it due to some inside joke or something completely irrelevant to the place... the name is bound to die out.

Most names are descriptive (or prenamed, like Metz). Some places, like AF, are very hard to describe... but it certainly is a folly for most people to go there! There, "discoverer names" do ok. But this place is pretty easily described, and "purple" is definitely not a description of it.

I'll stick with Fire Springs.

Bwaa haa..

Finding the cave was a Cloak and Dagger quest! You have to participate in the RP if you want to have a say.. You need to involve yourself.. and all that nonsense.

Mary Jane lead the charge to follow the burns.. Mary Jane found the cave.. Mary Jane the first to enter the cave.. OMG you lost, she won! Name rights forever on the cave! Heh...Did you gripe this much about the change of the "Samahee" creatures to "Yorilla"?

Purple Springs is a perfectly fitting name. Reference to the Mary Jane thats not obvious and "springs" thats descriptive.

Purple Springs(PS) is what i'll be refering to it as.

Fire Springs? Sounds like some place you'd find in a totally unoriginal NES game. Clanlord has lore connected to many of its named areas. Yes, in 2 years someone might say "what? Purple Springs? Why is it called that? The water isnt purple.." and then that will bring about the telling "Oh, it was found by MaryJane who called herself 'the purple mystic' " and onward the legend of purple will grow.

Actually, the ground looked purplish to me when you enter. Have you been there? Not a deep purple, but a purplish cast. (or maybe it's just my monitor). I mostly don't want to have an exile's name attached to any places, although Jannar's Grove, Alchemist's Folly and Wisher's Gate still survive. Kiriel was kind enough to reject Kiriel's whatever it was and campaign for Camp Dred, which is where CD came from.

It is true it will be up to the community to decide. I personally hate the name "Hippie Hollow" but that seems to be what people call that area. When Metzetli Island first came around, there was a discussion about what to call it because "MI" was taken. Some people wanted ZI. I preferred Metz. The people who preferred "Metz" eventually won out. So you can call it what you want, and others can call it what they want, and we shall see eventually what sticks. (Shades of Fire Island/Devil's Island? ) ;)
