H'loi friends and lesser races-

Recently, through explorations of *censored* in the *censored*, I've come across what appears to be a potentially valuable artifact. Namely, a tome containing many secrets of nautical knowledge.

Both the University of Puddleby and the Pirates are interested in this book for its information and practical application. However, I'm quite certain the Darshak are after the book as well. With my luck, the Orga caught wind too and are after me...as usual....

In the interest of protecting this artifact, I'm organizing a tourney between the Pirates of Lok'Groton and the University of Puddleby.

The tourney will be in two parts...a challenge of knowledge, and a challenge of strength. The challenge of knowledge will be based a series of questions of increasing difficulty about the lands. The challenge of strength will be a duel to the the last group standing in the Badlands. As those who would steal our knowledge do not play by any rules, neither will there be strict rules governing this match, with the exception of no outside help allowed. Even fens will be allowed to participate, smelly and unwashed as they may be.

The teams of 4 will be selected by the UoP and Pirates, and be announced on Thoomcare soon. The same team of 4 will participate in both contests...they must display both knowledge and strength within their group. No substituting allowed. The winning team will gain for their respective groups the possession and right to defend this artifact from those who would take it.

Furthermore, to commemorate this event, a Bard songwriting contest will also take place. The primary requirement is that the song should be nautical in theme. I will start the prize pot at 3000 coins. Donations will be accepted, and part parts/instruments will also be happily accept for the grand prize winner.

No exact date has been set yet...keep your eyes on the Sentinel and Thoomcare. It won't be more than several zodiacs away.

If yi wish to help in terms of baking/brewing or donating, please contact me in the lands.

Be well.

I'd ask for more information about the contents of this tome, but then I suppose it would no longer be secret!

From ThoomCare:
Wangah Rah wrote: Official Announcement of the teams chosen:

Kalian, Yor, Kani, Cinnamon

Representing the University of Puddleby
Daimoth, Gorvin, Kerrah, Lorikeet
Now hold on just a minute. I admire the Daimoth and Gorvin's strong arms and willingness to volunteer, but I'm not sure if either have ever been inside the University of Puddleby or attended a class ... much less taught one or participated in any administrative capacity.

Other than being on familiar terms with two of the University's past lecturers (and who isn't, really?), I don't see any connection with the UoP at all. Given that there's a fairly broad swathe of exiles who have been involved in the University, I don't see the necessity of bringing in team members who have no clear association.

Wangah didn't say anything about the participants having to be officially affiliated with either side. This isn't like a clan contest, where participants all need to be members of the same clan. The UoP made their selections, and they chose the four of us. The Pirates made their own selections.

Seems fair to me.

I did tell the UoP they could choose champions willing to fight for them, so their team choice is legal, whether or not popular. As they did follow the instructions given, I will not force them to change their team makeup.

However, when a group does not choose its own members, the champions ARE usually closely tied and loyal to the group. If this team claims to be associated with UoP, I expect from this to see Gorvin and Daimoth and such to attend several sessions on the history of the Lok'groton island chains and score very highly on the exam given shortly afterwards. The section on KI will be omitted, and lore on the Zodiacs will be emphasized.

Regardless of the questionable recruitment methods the badlands portion of this contest is in serious danger of being a joke. The Pirates will have to pull off a major miracle to win. We know it and they know it. It's like putting the New York Yankees up against a college baseball team. :)

I still intend on participating and trying to win but it probably would be more exciting if some effort was made to make each side reasonably even in the badlands portion.

From the (different) rules posted on Thoomcare:
The second will be a battle of strength, in the Badlands. Due to the size of the Badlands, there will be several judges stationed around to observe the battle and record tactics. Points will be awarded both to the winner, and to both teams for cunning use of tactics (if cunning tactics are used). Therefore, simply winning the battle will not be nearly as beneficial as winning through clever tactics.
So lose the badlands part with style and you can still win.

Certainly. :)

Like I said, I (and the others) still intend to participate and win but there's no denying we're at a disadvantage. We can't possibly kill them all but they can kill us. That's one less way for us to do this compared to them.

We'll see what happens. :)

I've spoken with parties involved, and the UoP will remain as originally planned. Rieger's advice is completely true.

Fiona herself made note of the slight irony in the apparent fact the UoP team will excel in the strength competetion, while the Pirates have a large edge in the knowledge portion.

The rules posted on Thoomcare are more complete then here; neither event will have a winner-take-all feel, but will be scored on a scale which will soon be finalized, looked over by several neutral parties (Still waiting to hear back from Zonk and Qual about being judges!) and then published here and on TMN.

Seems Mephisto is going to replace Lorikeet for the UoP team as Lori might be busy on the day of the competition.
