The Winds of Dawn do hereby announce that we will be holding our seventh coining contest, “Blow It with the Winds!” The purpose of this contest is to raise funds for our upcoming Newbielympics. All exiles are welcome to form teams of 4 or so and compete for fabulous cash prizes! Come coin-whore with us until you drop!

The detailed rules:

Teams must have 3 to 5 exiles.

If you have trouble finding a team, contact the referee, and she will find one for you.

Teams must have a name. If your team cannot choose a name, or the referee does not approve of your name, the referee will choose one for you. Choose wisely, or you could wind up on the Flower Power iTeam.

Blowing It With The Winds will start and end at the bottom of the cliff in the myrm highlands. Time is from 2PM PDT on Saturday, July 15th to 2PM PDT on Sunday, July 16th. Team members are not required to be at the opening or closing, but only coins earned between these times count.

During the contest team members must stay together when out of library. When hunting, teams can hunt with other exiles or even other teams, but only the coins collected by the team members themselves count.

Coins for the contest must be earned; donations do not count.

Any method of earning coins is allowed, including hunting, payment/tips for services, selling/auctioning of items, gambling, etc.

Any materials used to earn coins (items for sale, ingredients for crafting, coins used to place bets, etc.) must be found during the contest, or purchased with coins earned during the contest. Nothing already in a player's possession when the contest begins may be used. One exception: repair supplies for tailoring or blacksmithing may be used, BUT the cost of the supplies must be deducted from any coins earned.

All sales, auctions or other transactions must be completed before the contest ends (note that this precludes the use of the raffle tables).

At the end of the contest, teams will turn their coins in to the referee. Teams do not have to present at the closing ceremonies, you may turn in your coins early, or have them passed on by an authorized third party (contact the referee for authorization). You may not turn in coins after the closing ceremony.

During the contest, the referee will occasionally poll the teams about their coin totals and post the standings by SS. When the referee is in the library, teams should send periodic updates by enchanted mail, particularly when team members take a break in the library.

Do NOT announce your total in any public forum. Only relative standings of the teams will be made public while the contest is in progress.

Prizes are as follows:
First prize-- 25% of all coins collected for the contest
Second prize-- 12%
Third prize-- 6%
Fourth prize--3%
Special Referee’s Prize: 2500 coins to ALL teams that beat the total of the team on which the referee participated in the last contest, 18855 coins.

Any questions concerning the rules should be addressed to this year's referee, Delirium.

Teams compete at their own risk. Winds of Dawn is not liable for falling, departing, lyfing, broken chains, or any other unfortunate events. If you find yourself in a difficult situation, the referee might try to arrange a rescue, particularly if you bribe her (she is fond of wine).

If you want to participate, post here, or contact the referee or another WoD member.

Note: these rules are based on the experiences of 6 previous contests. The first five were only open to WoD members and friends. Last time, we opened it up a bit more, and this time we are throwing it open to everyone who wants to play. This is how we have funded a large portion of the generous prizes we give out at the Newbielympics. More details about the Newbielympics (like the dates) will be available later, but we plan to hold them sometime in the OOC fall, before the feast of Tsirrin. We will be asking for help hosting events, so if you would like to run an event at the Newbielympics, let us know!

Just out of curiosity. What happened to the generous gifts of Falken to the Newbielympics? Never saw them for sale, consciously, and still wondering what a youngun does with a catsbane necklace...

Couldn't answer what happened to Falken's gifts, but there are times when young ones are taken to the Cove, or even to the interior--sometimes to tag the "junk" or just to have the experience. I know because I've loaned out necklaces. (There are, of course, different definitions of "younguns" but I think anyone under lord is allowed in the newbies olympics, with different categories for those under master and those under lord, if I remember correctly.)

I think all the items Falken gave us were given out as prizes, although one or two items may have been sold to raise funds for cash prizes. I think Kiriel was in charge of tracking the items. WoD actually has very good record keeping, it's just that I wasn't very involved in keeping track of all the items. According to our records, the only items currently in the clan treasury are some metal, a couple of chains and a RHP. I seem to be having trouble with the treasury log right now, so I can't look back and see what happened with the items just now. However, the prizes given out are a matter of public record, and last years prizes can be seen here:

http://www.windsofdawn.org/nlympics/

In looking quickly over the list, I see three catsbane necklaces given out (each was a 1st place prize for a contest).

As for the wisdom of giving catsbanes necklaces to newer exiles, I echo what Lorikeet said: Many times younger exiles are taken by more exprienced exiles to the cove. In such situations, the younger exiles are far more likely to fall than the older exiles, and therefore in greater need of a necklace.

Lorikeet is also correct about who can participate in the Newbielympics.

In general, the prizes we give out at the Newbielympics are very generous. I think last year we gave out prizes worth about 3,000 coins per event on average and we had about 15 events. We were particularly generous last time because of both Falkin's gifts and because the "Blow It" contest did well - we raised about 18,000 coins last time.

The "Blow It" contests started out as a private clan-only events and I've always had a lot of fun with them. Over the years we have made them progressively more public. I see this as equal parts a fund-raiser for the Newbielympics and an event that will be fun for the whole community. So find a few other exiles and form a team!

Ah ok, didnt know over Master/Mistress could participate too. That makes sense then. I have to admit, I rarely see under Master/Mistress people on KI, but that might be just me not being able to clan that much anymore.

Of course, we welcome donations. Farhope, Kiriel, or myself are probably the best people to give stuff to. Our clan meetings are noon pacific time on Sundays, so that's probably the best time to see to such matters.

I hope that you will also consider participating in the Blow It With the Winds contest!

I hope everyone does their best to get a team entered!

It's fun contest! It should be interesting to see how much money is able to get raised with the contest open to everyone this time.

Hopefully nobody is out that weekend trying to earn some cash on their own. I think it'll be slim pickings :)

Team Backrest!

Ah yes, the paperwork has started to come in....

/action squints at a stained scrap of parchment

It looks like the first team to register is...

/grumbles This handwriting is terrible. Was this form filled out by a drunk dorf or a nippy fen? And what are these stains? Is this milk???

Well it looks like it says....

/action squints again

Ah!

Team Backrest!

And the members are....

/action squints

/action pulls out a magnifying lens

Connie Crete
Konoko
Amelia

and

possibly a 4th round draft pick to be named later

Well, it's good to see a registration form come it. But what will their competition look like? This team is composed of veterans, but in all their previous wins, these players were teamed with another. Will they be able to find a rookie to fill out their team? Will they get blown away by the competition this time? Lets see what players the other teams are able to pull together!

Get ready to Blow It With The Winds! Form your team now!
