Remember when you had to chop at fallen logs for a few seconds to extract a piece of wood?

Yeah, lame. I hope those people who want trade skills to be based on repetitive, boring actions think about how much more fun the world is now that we have to spend an extra five seconds per log. Multiply that by thousands.

Better than completely random actions. And not trade skills, but resource gathering. We already do it for zu.

Trade skills should involve effort.

Library alts are not fun.

Most people can afford the $10 to buy an extra character slot on their account to get a library blacksmith/mender/etc, but most people don't have the time to repeatedly do trade skills in order to learn them. Even I don't have that kind of time, so I know for a fact the casual player won't either.

This is somewhat true, mostly wrong.

Already there is at least one libchar for each "trade skill" trainer with >1000 ranks. If you need to have something mended/repaired/whatever, you go to them, because they're the best deal. Sure, you may be able to buy a character for $10 and put it in the library, but it's going to be three years about until it's the same level. And guess what? By that time, the other libchars have also gained 3 years worth of ranks, and your character is still going to be unused.

The whole uncapped-tradeskills thing just leads to the One Libchar to Rule them All syndrome, where you have one preferred libchar to use, because they have the most ranks, and you don't really use anyone else, because you want to save money.

This leads to the entire system being completely worthless: *One* (well, very few at most!) character is getting use for the whole system, we might as well make them an NPC and get rid of the rest of it, because it's about equivalent. So all the people who *could* be having fun roleplaying and actually doing smithing or mending or whatever things can't or won't, because no one will ever use them (unless they like getting strictly worse deals).

What you do mean, anyway, that "most people don't have the time to learn trade skills"? Not everyone has to TradeWhore to hit the limit (yes, there had better be caps, or at least very small return for training beyond a certain point) in a week. Most people would repair a few pieces of armor here, mend a few pants there. It would take exactly zero extra time to learn these skills than they normally spend in game. Casual players would definitely have time - most people sit at least a little while in TC, and that'd a great place to find people who need a little mending or refining or smithing.

It's about 10,000x better than the poorly-thought-out system we have in place.

I have no problem with people who mend/repair/forge items getting better at it. I just don't want a system that encourages people to go out to a forest to chop wood for hours or to a mine to dig ore for hours. Social interaction can be fun; mindless farming/mining/harvesting (probably in the middle of nowhere, not in TC) isn't fun.
