Free Rent as all Houses in Puddleby

SO here's the idea in the title,

Every game I play these days has a way to make a house, and build upon it. The key to them is none of them require rent to keep living there. You automatically get a safe spot, and you pay to upgrade it. So, instead of having to pay rent, what if we could convince the landlords that we are the patron protectors of Puddleby, and have earned permanent properties here. As a result, if we collect resources or do some other task for the landlord, we can have our own home rent free. Furniture is still at a premium of course.

I would even take this further to suggest we make storage with Storina free as well, for the same arguments.

The main reason for free rent is twofold. One is that it allows people to never fear of losing access to content because they have not played enough or earned enough coins in a short time. Two, is that a safe spot home for all without the penalty of fees would encourage people to have a personal stake in the game, and enjoy their homes as an integral part of the game. Essentially the second reason is that it will increase popularity for the game, possibly helping to increase population.

Houses are nice as a coin sink, but unfortunately they're kind of useless since you have to go to sleep in the library anyway.

If houses were a minor surcharge on the libraries (e.g. 1k/zodiac gets you the most expensive library + a large size?) I think that'd be a nicer solution. I always wanted a house, but never wanted to coin massively just to maintain one.

Just make an exponential cost per ROI for house sleep so people can choose to sleep in the house for more experience and money per zodiac than the library but they will go bankrupt very quickly if they choose to. Coin sink and better library in one.

I like my house... it's the smallest size but the upkeep is pretty well nothing.

IMO a little like RL wealth, people are often a lot more creative if they are forced to design something within a restrictive environment. My house is more for myself than anybody else since my clan has a clanhouse. While small, I think that it's very possible to turn it into a unique pad. The rent is what... 50 coins a month?

I'd rather buy a house for 50000 than pay rent every week or whatever it is, given the choice. If it does have an upkeep cost, it should be competitive with the expensive library in exp.

I agree with Icy & Dai: if you rent a house, then it should give top tier + library exp (or appropriate bonus per size) or be bought outright. When houses came out, I would have gotten one, but the rent, while not huge, was a limiting factor that made me never investigate owning one.

What’d be even cooler was if houses can have separate exits and entrances that drop you in various places. Like a front door in puddleby TC snell and a backdoor that opens up anywhere you can gather enough building materials to collect and get to. Want your backdoor to be the BP outpost? fine hire a builder for a monthly fee (200c/month) to collect stones, and after 20,000 wood & stone (or 100,000c: 50c - 1 stone or log) the builder crafts a portal door to it in 6 IC months (1.5 RL months). If you want a 2nd back door to Metz RF? the “fee” and time to build doubles each time: 40,000w/s or 200,000c. etc.

Why would you make the fee double when it would be easier to just own a second house and have the first fee twice?

This would also be cool for sharing the wealth because often clans pay the rent. If you kept rent as a requirement, but the clan's house gave the same (if not more) exp than the normal library then there'd be an incentive to form a clan and socialise with them. If nobody's paid the rent then everybody misses out on exp... so you cooperate in order to pay the bills.

This idea could:
- Make n00b acceleration a reality because there'd be a 'better' library (clan houses)
- Allow benevolent clan leaders to share the wealth out a bit (so that their clan gets better)
- Provide more reason for people to have cool houses
- Possibly allow for more exploring... for example, bump up exp if houses have certain objects in them

To me it could be a bit like The Sims... if you have a stack of designer furniture and luxury items then you have a better sleep. IMO the system already advantages those who have the capacity to make more money. This could make the gap wider, but it would also allow those who have (e.g. clan leaders) to share with others (without losing anything).

There could also be some secret items that help your clan study better temporarily. For example, double exp for a (human) week if you find an old book or something.
